The history of the Wonder Bur is somewhat shrouded in mystery. A few of its past proprietors managed to solidly trace its lineage back to 1936, yet stories suggest it was in operation much before that. Though unconfirmed, a local myth claims that The Wonder Bur began in modest conditions from a structure with a tented roof, before the era of prohibition. The well-known brick edifice that now houses The Wonder Bur was constructed in the early 1900s. Initially, it served as a grocery storage facility before being transformed into the Wonderbar.

The Wonder Bur originally went by the name Wunderbar, which translates to Wonderful in German. The name changed to Wonder Bar some time just after prohibition. In 1933 the Oregon Liquor Control Commission was established, it was decreed that bars could not include the word “Bar” in their titles. According to a local legend, when the OLCC approached the bar’s owner about the name, the owner scaled the building with a chainsaw and removed the top part of the “a” in “Bar,” resulting in the name changing to “Bur,” thus transforming Wonder Bar into Wonder Bur. Ever since, the name has become an integral part of the history of downtown Grants Pass.
